Gurukul system is an education system, originated in India around 5000+ years ago. This system was more active during Vedic age where Shisyas (students) were taught various subjects and about culture and disciplined life. The living space was actually Guru (teacher, where Gu means God and Ru means visible) house. This type of relationship between Guru and Shishya was so sacred that no fee was taken from the students. But Students should offer 'Gurudakshina' in respect to Guru at the ending of Gurukul education. Gurudakshina may be in the form of money, cow or any task.
History :- Near around eight lakhs Gurukuls are mentioned in hindu history, including Varuni, Yajnavalkya and more famous Gurukuls. Those Vedic school allows all individuals including women's before the age of 8 to 12. In Gurukuls Shisyas have to follow brahamcharya till completion of education. Gurukuls was supported by public donations and this was followed by many Vedic followers. By time our gurukul system was declined by mugals and britishers. In present time only a few gurukul are going and other converted into schools.

Guru-Shisya Parampara :- A lot of importance has been given to the system of Parampara. Traditions have lead a balance and preservance in indian ecosystem. It is true that without keeping Parampara with us we can't learn anything. It is the relation that gives a way or provide a path to society. It helps to grow Shisyas in every field.
Merits :- - The Parampara used to take its time and due to this the students used to come out in a very perfect manner. - Gurus had excellent knowledge and knew how to teach the most hardest things. - Student was well trained, and used to inherit a certain style. - The Shisyas have very humble respect to Gurus. - Were taught face to face and orally that help to grow mind easily.
Importance of Gurukul :- The focus of the girukul is imparting knowledge in Shisyas in natural surroundings. The essential teaching were in different subjects, our culture and discipline etc. For the peace of mind and value of life they also learnt other activities like Yoga, mediation etc. This system was helped our ancestors that how to live in real.
Gurukul system needed in today time ? In simple words Yes! Because the modern education is not good enough. As it only consider degree in hands not knowledge and education. When there was lakhs of Gurukuls runs in india, there was not a single education building in the whole world. The Gurukuls system has no demerits in itself is its merit. Modern education only making people selfish and robots. But if we join hands together we convert modern education society in traditional.
Overall the idea of inculcating a Gurukul system in indian education is just to assist the children in understanding the concept of life.
Thank you
